Exercise in Transmission: Meditative Control #1 from SB on Vimeo.
This piece is concerned with surveillance: how we use it, how it is used on us, every day, as a veil of protection; a veil of control; a veil of love or attention. In considering how we use communication technology to transmit orders globally and locally, this performance references pseudo-militaristic methods of operations. Experimenting with locale and proximity and the act of commanding others.
Someone else is acting on your body, asking you to move—how does one cognize this information, morally and physically? What signals are we waiting for to act upon?
I engaged directly with the audience to participate in a gesture
of control; control to create catharsis. Audience members could listen in on headphones to the intimate conversation I was having with the participant as they moved through the space, washed a knife, and eventually stabbed a canvas.
